A Komatsu bulldozer helps build sand castles and summer dreams, getting ready to celebrate “Umi no Hi” (Marine Day).
Officially declared in 1996, it is a relatively new national holiday. Like many seasonal events in Japan, it is a day to appreciate the joys and blessings of nature. As we give thanks for the bounty of the seas surrounding our island nation, we also take a break to play in the sand and surf on the first public holiday of summer.
While enjoying the holiday, let’s spare a thought for how we can preserve the beauty and vitality of the marine environment for future generations.
