There are a few reasons is doing this drill.

One, he’s recovering from Tommy John surgery, and, while he can’t throw at the moment, we want to keep his skill of moving down the mound familiar, so he doesn’t need to take time to relearn the feel when it’s time to do so in the future. We’ll start to incorporate medball throws off the mound soon to continue this skill work.

Two, holding the 20 pound medball near his center of mass helps him feel and use back leg hip loading and control his center of mass, so he can learn to keep his torso from getting ahead of his lower body. You can also see how he maintains if not gains counter rotation into foot plant. In theory, this could help with velocity and possibly command of his pitches.
