Wondering how I feel about a republican candidate for Congress in our community featuring Jeremy Rogers, an insurrectionist who assaulted police on January 6 in the Midland memorial Day parade of all places?!

Nothing says “support our troops” quite like featuring a convicted Jan. 6 insurrectionist in your Memorial Day parade campaign operation.

Memorial Day is supposed to honor Americans who gave their lives defending democracy, constitutional government, and the peaceful transfer of power. Those are the exact American ideals the Jan. 6 mob attacked.

Yet there was Jeremy Rodgers, once the Midland Republican Party’s golden boy, rolling through the parade on his signature unicycle in full display while campaigning for Al Lemmo for Congress.

Yes, that Jeremy Rodgers. The man identified in FBI files as the “Freshman Flagger,” accused and convicted of assaulting a police officer with a flagpole during the violent effort to overturn the 2020 election.

Let’s stop pretending Jan. 6 was just an overly rowdy protest.

Police officers were beaten. Congress was evacuated. Windows were smashed. A mob shouting “hang Mike Pence” stormed the Capitol trying to overturn an election they lost.

And now one of the people convicted in connection with that attack is apparently considered perfectly acceptable company for Al Lemmo on Memorial Day of all days.

Frankly, Midland should be embarrassed that Jeremy Rodgers and his crimes are associated with our community. The local Republican Party should definitely be embarrassed of their former candidate and staffer. And Al Lemmo should be embarrassed to have him anywhere near his campaign.

The fact that he apparently feels no embarrassment whatsoever says all we need to know about his judgment and values.

Midland is not some extremist outpost. Most people here, regardless of party, understand that assaulting police officers and participating in an attack on democracy should end a person’s political credibility, not earn them a starring role in a patriotic parade.

If Al Lemmo is comfortable aligning himself with pardoned Jan. 6 rioters, voters should take him at his word. He is showing us exactly who he is.
We can do way better.

Is it just me, or do the photos of the UFC arena being built at the White House have major spoiled rich kid birthday party energy?

Like a wealthy little boy throwing himself the biggest party imaginable and expecting all his friends to show up, clap, smile for the photos, and pretend they’re having the time of their lives.

And all of this while we’re in a war of choice. And while regular people are looking at gas prices and deciding a modest summer road trip isn’t in the budget, or skipping grilled steaks on Memorial Day because groceries already cost enough.

The disconnect is stunning. And embarrassing.

There’s something so out of touch about turning one of the country’s most symbolic spaces into a giant spectacle (on your birthday!!) while so many people are just trying to make ordinary life balance out.
