The 68RFE transmission often gets a bad reputation for weak overdrive clutches but in reality, those clutches are usually just the symptom of a deeper issue.

In this failure, a snap ring came loose and caused excessive movement in the drum. That movement led to the overdrive clutch pack burning up. It didn’t stop there—the added play also allowed contact that damaged the 2–4 piston assembly.
