Last week 20 members of our Student Flight participated in the 2026 Maryland Department of Emergency Management Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX), a large multiagency event designed to test and improve emergency response capabilities in the region.
The exercise was held at Gunpowder Falls State Park and brought together various local, state and federal emergency response agencies, including the Maryland Helicopter Aquatic Response Team, the Maryland Army National Guard, Baltimore County Police, Maryland State Police and more to tackle a simulated large scale search and rescue incident.
Student Flight, managed by the 175th Force Support Squadron, is a program for new Maryland Air National Guard members who are awaiting Basic Military Training. Our Student Flight volunteers acted as simulated victims of a natural disaster event, often being hoisted into the air by emergency responders.
"For the Student Flight members, the exercise was more than just a training event; it was an opportunity to contribute to the readiness of the state's emergency responders and to see firsthand the impact of their future service," said Maryland Air National Guard Senior Master Sgt. Robert Pounders, force development office superintendent. "Their involvement not only made the exercise more realistic for the other participants but also provided them with a memorable and educational experience that will undoubtedly serve them well as they begin their military careers. The 175th Wing is proud of its Student Flight members for their professionalism and dedication during this important state exercise."

Meet Maryland Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Ronnie Huggins, an information systems security officer for the 175th Communications Squadron.
He began his journey in the National Guard as a crew chief assigned to the 175th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. As the mission for the wing shifted away from flying Huggins adapted and changed as well to focus on the cyber mission at hand.
“I am proud to serve in the National Guard for many reasons," stated Huggins. "My biggest reason is the effectiveness of our members and our ability to adapt to changing missions. I am looking forward to the development and modernization of the technology the Air Force is using and getting to be a part of that advancement."
