One of the hardest lessons in helping professions is learning the difference between responsibility and control.

When a client isn’t progressing, a family isn’t engaging, a team member is struggling, or a system barrier keeps getting in the way, it’s natural to ask:

“What else can I do?”

That’s often a good question. It reflects commitment, creativity, and a desire to help.

But over time I’ve learned there’s another question that’s just as important:

“What am I ethically and professionally obligated to do?”

Those questions are not always the same.

There is almost always something more we could do:

* another meeting,
* another email,
* another training,
* another resource,
* another attempt at problem solving.

The challenge is recognizing when we’ve reached the edge of what our role can reasonably accomplish without participation from other stakeholders.

At some point, progress may depend on a caregiver, a physician, a teacher, an employer, a funding source, or another support system. We can educate, advocate, document, collaborate, and recommend. We cannot make decisions for other people.

That doesn’t mean we stop caring.

It doesn’t mean we stop trying.

It means we shift from asking, “How do I carry this entire outcome?” to “Have I acted competently, compassionately, and responsibly within my role?”

For many helping professionals, that’s a difficult distinction to make.

But it’s an important one.

We are responsible for our actions, our recommendations, our communication, and our advocacy.

We are not solely responsible for every outcome.
