Chinese tech giant Baidu is rolling out a new purpose-built robotaxi in cities across China. The company describes it as a Level 4 autonomous vehicle that costs as little as $30,000 to make. That the company is able to deliver a high-quality AV for so little should strike fear into the hearts of U.S. competitors, writes the Verge’s Andrew Hawkins. Waymo’s performance is comparable, but it has yet to show it can bring costs nearly as low as Baidu. Meanwhile, Tesla hasn’t even shown that it can develop the technology, let alone at a low price. Volvo Cars' sales rose 27% in April from a year earlier to 65,838 cars, boosted by demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, the Sweden-based group said on Monday. Volvo Cars, majority-owned by China's Geely Holding, said in a statement sales of fully electric cars were up 94% and accounted for 26% of all sales globally in the month. Sales in Europe, Volvo Cars' biggest market, jumped 65% compared to the same period last year, reaching 34,238 cars, with the company's fully electric small SUV, EX30, driving sales, Volvo Cars added.
