How Chest Compressions Keep Someone Alive

During cardiac arrest, the heart stops pumping enough blood to the brain and other vital organs. Chest compressions temporarily take over that job by keeping oxygen-rich blood circulating throughout the body.

For CPR to be effective:

What to Do in the First 60 Seconds of a Cardiac Arrest

The first 60 seconds can make a life-saving difference:

-Check for responsiveness. Tap their shoulder and shout, “Are you okay?”
-Call 911 immediately. Put the phone on speaker so you can keep helping.
-Check breathing. If the person is not breathing or is only gasping, begin CPR.
-Start chest compressions. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
-Send someone for an AED. Use it as soon as it arrives and follow the voice prompts.

You do not have to be perfect to help. Acting quickly can make a big difference before emergency responders arrive.
