Antibiotics are compounds that bacteria and fungi produce naturally, to kill or inhibit rival microbial species. This phenomenon has been known for a long time, but it was not until 1928 that Alexander Fleming, professor of bacteriology, discovered penicillin, the first true antibiotic.

On one of the working dishes he noticed something unusual. It was dotted with colonies, except for one area where a patch of mold was growing. The area around the mold that was later identified as a rare strain of Penicillium was clear, as if the mold had secreted something that inhibited bacterial growth.

Thus it was discovered that its "mold juice" was capable of killing a wide range of harmful bacteria, such as streptococci, meningococci and diphtheria bacillus.

Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause different health effects, or none at all.

Some people are sensitive to mold. For these people, exposure may cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, wheezing, or red or itchy eyes or skin.

People with asthma or mold allergies may also have more severe reactions. Severe reactions can occur among workers exposed to large amounts of mold in their work environments, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and difficulty breathing.

Mold feeds on organic matter, such as leaves, wood, paper and food. How does it do it? We explain!

Fungi have the ability to produce a wide variety of extracellular enzymes. That is, they release reactive proteins from inside their cells to the outside environment.

Then, fungi transform these nutrients, feed on them and develop, first in the form of mycelium, some even forming fruiting bodies; and at the same time, they make the nutrients they do not use available to other organisms.

This whole process is based on using specialized infrared thermal imaging equipment, we check for mold behind walls and take humidity and temperature readings in all rooms.
