The conversation around AI is usually focused on what it can do.
I’m much more interested in what becomes more valuable because of it.
When everyone has access to the same tools, the advantage shifts to leadership, judgment, trust, customer experience, and building great teams. Those are the things that create businesses people come back to year after year.
Technology will keep changing. Human relationships are still one of the strongest competitive advantages you can build.
One of the things I’ve learned through The Veteran Fund is that some of the strongest founders don’t come from traditional startup backgrounds.
A lot of them come from the military, where they spent years leading teams, making decisions under pressure, managing complex operations, and solving problems with limited resources.
The challenge isn’t whether those skills translate to business. The challenge is helping other people see the connection.
When we evaluate founders, we’re looking far beyond résumés. We’re looking at leadership, resilience, adaptability, and the ability to execute when things get difficult. Those are the qualities that build great companies, regardless of where someone started their career.
That’s one reason I love investing in veteran founders. They’ve already spent years proving they can perform when the stakes are high.
