It is an automotive safety device that analyzes blood alcohol content of a driver to determine if they are safe to get behind the wheel of a car. The Determinator(R) stops drunk driving. The Determinator is safe, flexible and easy to use. How does The Determinator(R) work? The durable ignition interlock comes with a user-friendly and discreet mouthpiece and a control module which is wired to the vehicle. When a key is inserted into the ignition of a car with The Determinator(R) installed:

•A voice will prompt the driver to provide a breath sample.
•The driver has 60 seconds to provide a deep lung sample.
•Analysis is conducted within 8-10 seconds.
•A voice will prompt the driver that they can start the car or that another sample will need to be provided.
•Allows 6-8 resamples as needed

•To discourage someone from providing the original breath sample, random rolling retests are given at intervals after starting.
•If a retest is failed, a voice prompts the driver to pull over and shut off the car. If this instruction is ignored, the horn will honk and lights will blink until the car is turned off.
•The system records all test and pertinent data which is downloadable and printable to meet state requirements. In addition, any unit tampering is also recorded. Important things to know

•View the instructional video that shows how to use The Determinator(R)
•Take a DEEP lung breath before you blow into the mouthpiece
•Be sure to form a good seal around the mouthpiece
•Blow with a firm even pressure until the tone stops
•Always respond to the rolling retest
•Remember you will be asked to do a rolling retest. Don't be distracted by the request for a breath sample while driving. You have up to 30 seconds
•Practice the rolling retest in a safe area to get used to focusing on driving while providing a breath sample
•Think ahead. Don't use mouthwash or cough medicine immediately before using the device
•Don't smoke tobacco products immediately before using the device or blow smoke directly into the sensor head
•If it is cold outside, consider taking the unit inside with you so you don't have to wait for it to warm up
•Don't attempt to circumvent or tamper with the unit or a lockout will occur
•Don't have someone else provide the breath sample or drive someone else's car. Strict penalties apply. How much does The Determinator(R) cost? There are various charges associated with The Determinator(R). Please call 913.362.5700 for pricing. How often do I have to have my interlock device downloaded and what is the process? The state of Kansas requires a download very 60 days. The process is very simple. Call to schedule an appointment at The Kansas DUI Resource Center and come in. We connect your device to our computer and the information is automatically transferred to the state to meet your court ordered requirements. The process is quick and typically takes less than 15 minutes. Be sure to schedule your appointment before your due date or you risk lock-out. What is a 'lock-out'? A lock-out is when your car will not start. This typically occurs because you have not been able to provide a clean breath sample for the re-tests or the rolling tests. A lock-out will also occur if the machine detects tampering. A lock-out will occur if you do not have your device downloaded by your service date. If this happens, call The Kansas DUI Resource Center, and we will provide you with instructions on how to unlock your device. A charge will apply. What is a random rolling test? A random rolling test is a test requested by The Determinator® device within a few minutes after the car has been driven for a set period of time. Who Should Use The Determinator®? Anyone who drives. The Determinator® is a great tool for those who might be in a position to drive while intoxicated. In addition, it is a powerful tool for parents who are concerned about the possibility of their children driving under the influence of alcohol.
