Lys Guillorn

I was listening to a suddenly-widely-popular polka-dotted Canadian Dada-mathrock band this morning (I do enjoy them, mind you) when I had the thought, "They play like they've never had to worry about paying for healthcare."

They've been around in different configurations for years, just now they've incorporated their visual art with their music in a format that has crossed national boundaries. Khn has literal dollar signs in their mask's eye holes. I don't think that's unintentional, and I don't fault them for it.

Will they remain in the public eye long? Maybe, maybe not. Some bands that have become popular due to their videos or visual presence have maintained longevity. They'll keep playing, though, as they have since they were kids.

All I do know is--they don't have to worry about losing their livelihood in order to pay for medical care.

I was recently reminded that the collaborative benefit residency Lys Guillorn and The Mercy Choir Present Wobbling Roof R***e was 10 years ago. So I thought I'd share with you the original press release that has the list of all of the performers at the end. Thank you to everyone who participated and listened and came along for the ride that very hectic and fun month in 2016.

Fridays in March at Never Ending Books in New Haven
Concert Proceeds to Benefit Connecticut Food Bank [now Connecticut Foodshare]

New Haven, Conn. - Songwriters Paul Belbusti of Mercy Choir and Lys Guillorn are co-presenting a variety show series in March [2016] at Never Ending Books, located in New Haven at 810 State Street. The series is called “Lys Guillorn and the Mercy Choir present Wobbling Roof R***e” and takes place every Friday in March. “Wobbling Roof” is also the name of a multi-media arts web-magazine founded and curated by Belbusti.

Belbusti says of the connection, “Wobbling Roof Magazine was initially an attempt to create a true multi-media publication where the work of sound artists, poets and visual artists can live together in one spot on the web or in print. I’m elated to see it coming to life as a variety show.”

Each Friday in March, five bands or performers will present short sets in the intimate performance space at Never Ending Books. There will also be some readings and other types of performances in-between. Performers are encouraged to go out on a limb in some way, to present new work or otherwise challenge themselves. The nights will showcase some of the projects in which Belbusti and Guillorn are involved as well as other talent from around Connecticut, many from the New Haven area. A listing of the performers for each date is below.

In 2013, Guillorn and Belbusti collaborated on a three-song EP titled “Trouble,” co-writing two songs and covering another by the Soft Boys. They have also performed together live.

Guillorn says, “Paul is one of my closest musical allies. When he approached me to collaborate on a residency, I said yes without hesitation. We both want this to be something different, and whether or not people know us or the other musicians, they can count on it to be exciting. We selected a mix of genres--rock bands, singer-songwriters, folk acts, experimental and pretty unclassifiable music. Folks may not like all of what we’re presenting, but with short sets, it’ll never be boring.”

The performers are generously donating their time, and the entirety of the suggested door charge will go to the Connecticut Food Bank. The Connecticut Food Bank** is the state’s non-profit leader in the fight against hunger and the largest provider of charitably donated food. The Connecticut Food Bank partnered with the food industry, food growers, donors and volunteers to provide enough food last year to prepare more than 18 million meals. The Connecticut Food Bank distributes that food through a network of community based programs to more than 300,000 people across six Connecticut counties. Never Ending Books is located at 810 State St., New Haven. Admission is a $5 suggested donation at the door, and all ages are welcome. “Wobbling Roof R***e” performances are set for Fridays March 4, 11, 18 and 25.
