The Creation Station in Downtown Merced is one of the few places in the valley where you can learn and practice Hawaiian and Tahitian dance, music, and culture. This is thanks to the work of business owner Kuma Hula Pi’ilaniokamoku, more commonly known as “Aunty Becky,” who is also known for being the director of the South Pacific Dance Company and the annual Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete dance festival.

This year, the Creation Station has welcomed new instructors to broaden its offerings and overall community. These new instructors are Christy McCammond, who offers belly dance lessons, and Leon “Vietnam” Carswell as the new break dance instructor. They are both eager and excited to see what the future holds as they foster growth in their respective communities.

Christy McCammond, a native Mercedian, returned to her beloved hometown after living in the Pacific Northwest for two decades. She had a dream to come home to help her community and those who are experiencing and battling homelessness. Now, a little over three years after her return, she is grateful for all of the incredible experiences and opportunities she has found through her love of Middle Eastern dance.

Christy aims to keep adding to Merced’s arts community and to continue her journey of teaching and learning. You can visit her personal website www.bellydancebasim.com or call her directly at (503) 856-5915 for more information regarding classes.

Leon “Vietnam” Carswell, the most recent addition to the Creation Station, is a five-time world-championship break dancer who has been hooked on the culture and community of dance since he was four years old and saw Michael Jackson. After traveling the world and soaking up as much knowledge and skill that this new art form had to offer throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Leon then began to teach. Notably, with his first class being taught in London.

Currently, Leon is offering lessons for those between the ages of 6 and 18, with goals of adding adult lessons in the near future. For more, call (209) 777-5935.

The Creation Station is located at 2400 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Downtown Merced.
