Red Line Editorial is seeking a dynamic sportswriter to join our team producing stories for the websites of major sports organizations while also contributing in our book publishing division.

Since 1998, RLE has partnered with major, national sports organizations to provide journalistic stories for their websites. The sportswriter would contribute regular stories to these websites, with many of them being athlete features. In addition, the sportswriter would assist in managing and editing content produced by freelance writers.

RLE is also a full-service book publishing company, and the sportswriter would contribute to this department in a variety of ways, including but not limited to authoring books for young readers.

This position is an ideal fit for a writer/editor who thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing, and collaborative environment; is able to produce clean and accurate copy, including on deadline; and is motivated to find and share unique stories from the sports world, ranging from youth hockey to Olympic gold medalists.

This job is a full-time position. Although most of the sports content work takes place during regular business hours, this position would include regular shifts (2+ weekends per month) of remote event coverage. In addition, by nature some interviews or stories might need to take place on evenings or weekends. Because of this, RLE offers flexible scheduling, including the potential for non-traditional weekends (e.g. Monday-Tuesday, instead of Saturday-Sunday).

The ideal candidate possesses the following:
— A four-year degree in journalism or related field
— Two-plus years of experience preferred; recent grads with significant work experience will also be considered
— The ability to produce clean, accurate stories in a timely and efficient manner
— Strict attention to detail, both in terms of factual accuracy but also in managing style and content preferences across multiple publications
— Proficiency with AP Style and headline writing
— A natural curiosity for storytelling, and a knack for writing about niche topics in a clear and accessible manner
— While a deep knowledge of Olympic and Paralympic sports is not essential, a familiarity with how high-level sports work on this level is ideal
— The ability to actively manage multiple projects at once, including coordinating both with clients and freelance staff, while also being proactive in pitching story ideas and planning for the future
— A strong editing voice, meaning the ability to make a story better rather than simply proofread it for typos
— Adaptability, and a willingness to roll with the unpredictability of sports coverage
— Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as Google Drive

This is a remote position, although the sportswriter would be welcome to work from our Mendota Heights office if interested. Some travel may be required.

RLE offers a competitive compensation package, including a health insurance plan, 401k, a casual work environment focused on cooperation, and the ability to grow both in your career and with the company.

If you are interested, please send your resume, cover letter, and writing samples to [email protected]. In your cover letter, include a two-paragraph explanation for why Mikaela Shiffrin is (or isn't) the greatest alpine ski racer of all time.

Compensation: Upper 30s to low 40s, DOQ, plus benefits.

No phone calls, please.
