We love and appreciate you all! Thanks to this community's donations, a donation from the local Memphis BLM chapter, and 901HR, we succeeded in bailing these parents out of not just 1 but 2 jails! Once we paid bail at 201 Poplar they "released" him to Bartlett 's jail and had to pay a smaller bail to get this husband/dad free.
But of course there is much more harm done than just "messing up one's day". This wife/mother/student, KiKi, used every cent their family had to pay her husband's bail (and STILL needed help from community because, unless you're wealthy, cash bail harms all one's family and loved ones too...and they're not even being accused of a crime!).
Unfortunately their car was impounded, and since they couldn't pay to get the car out when they were in jail obviously, those daily fees add up. So...WE STILL NEED DONATIONS IF YOU CAN HELP! They must raise now about $1,000 just to get their car (and ALL THEIR BELONGINGS LEFT INSIDE THE CAR) back!

There are many harms to living in this system that runs off the idea of "guilty until proven innocent " that people don't think about. And even if proven innocent, the damage done by that failure, that choice to arrest and jail an innocent person most often because of the police's failure to actually know the law, their harmful stereotypes, and inaccurate assumptions, is insurmountable! It destroys people's lives! If 901HR and the community were not able to step in, child protection services would have taken their son away, spent months in jail before even going to court or being charged as either innocent or guilty of that crime, lost their apartment (couldn't pay rent), got an eviction on their record, lost their job, kicked out of school, and more.
Despite doing everything we could, they still now may lose their job/income/schooling bc they do not have reliable transportation without their car. Also, MANY of their important NECESSARY belongings are in this car! Help and share if you can!

Some of our most caring and compassionate folks need your help! This couple was arrested by MPD after being pulled over for a broken taillight. Since her release, the wife has sold all of the belongings she could possibly sell, including very sentimental items, and hasn't slept since her release, all because she needs her husband released from 201 Poplar! He is a beloved member of our community, and also has a medical condition that the jail is not taking seriously. PLEASE if you have the means to do so, help us help her get her husband out of 201 Poplar!
We all know that jail is a human rights violation, and nobody deserves to be treated so horribly.

Something we hear quite often from unhoused PWUD in these Memphis streets:
💔
“The people out here are my family. The 901 Harm Reduction team is my family. Y’all are more family to me than my real family.”
💔
As much as our 901HR team often feels the same, it’s heartbreaking to hear because we know why. So many people who use drugs (PWUD) have been rejected, hidden, or judged by their own families bc of the stigma created by the so-called “War on Drugs.” Parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and loved ones become treated like shameful secrets instead of loved ones deserving of care, dignity, & support.

That shame & stigma were never accidental. The “War on Drugs” has always functioned as a scapegoat: blaming drugs & those who use them for society’s deeper failures, while ignoring the poverty, trauma, isolation, violence, & hopelessness driving so many to use in the first place. THIS IS BY DESIGN!
☕️
Many use to cope & survive, yet feel forced to hide it. We live in a society where countless people are closeted about their use bc punishment & stigma make honesty unsafe. That's exactly what keeps drug use dangerous, leads to "addiction", & causes overdose deaths.

Willie (working on floor) built a custom bike FOR FREE for our Exec Director, , simply bc she needed it. At 5ft tall, finding a bike that fit her while accommodating cargo/storage needs felt impossible. Willie has also answered emergency 901HR calls to help protect our domestic violence survivors.
🙏
Montrell & Keasha found chosen family through the q***r-safe fun at , each other, Willie, and 901HR. Amber (far right), our newest 901HR organizer, is proudly trans-femme. Thanks to initiating a partnership with us, engaging in our offered harm redux training, and their collaboration, we’ve also been able to connect q***r PWUD to their recently funded housing program. Amber was recently accepted into OUTMemphis’ youth housing program! Since then, she’s become a trusted source for our q***r PWUD like Montrell/Keasha!
🌈
This is what mutual aid, chosen family, and community care looks like. In a society built on isolation, punishment, and abandonment, THIS IS RESISTANCE! 🙌

UPDATE!!! Our SSP (Syringe Services Program) weekly day/time has changed!
New Date: EVERY Wednesday
New Time: 6pm-8pm
It shouldn't be controversial to provide safe and clean drvg use supplies; research demonstrates that providing harm reduction supplies as such does not increase drvg use, or "enable" drvg use. Instead, research shows PWUD (people who use drugs) will use regardless of having clean supplies. This means they will use dirty or blunted needles and be at an increased risk of HIV, HEP-C, and many other diseases through transmission.
We don't need researchers to tell us this though because we're run by and for PWUD, and people with lived and currently living experience. EVERYONE uses drvgs. Being a harm reduction organization run by and for PWUD means we don't push or force abstinence, treatment, or anything that would take away one's autonomy.
So....COME AS YOU ARE! We meet people WHERE THEY'RE AT! So whether you're at your lowest moment or feeling good, whether you need all the supplies, or wanna come join us and volunteer, we've seen it all and we don't judge, stigmatize, or discriminate....because we've been there! All of our outreach events and drop ins are a stigma-free, judgement free safe environment!
This past year has certainly been one of our most difficult as well and many of us are struggling ourselves too. So we can't be more clear and genuine when we say all this 💚❤️🫂

901 Harm Reduction has faced so much oppression and gatekeeping in recent months, along with some of our organizers experiencing homelessness themselves. But we don't stop because our common enemy doesn't stop. The drug war doesn't stop destroying lives. It's winning everyday! We're gonna change that within every community! So don't feel afraid to get involved just because you don't think it affects you! EVERYONE USES DR*GS!
