Steve Cropper (1941–2025)

One of the greatest guitarists and songwriters in American music has passed away. Though born in Missouri, Steve Cropper was made in Memphis. At Stax, as part of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, he helped create the sound that defined this city — writing and playing on classics like “Dock of the Bay,” “Green Onions,” and “In the Midnight Hour.”

Cropper carried Memphis soul to the world. His guitar, his groove, and his legacy will forever be part of the 901.
