What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a historic day that marks the freeing of enslaved African Americans in America. It is a day of great historical and cultural importance, and is an opportunity to celebrate the freedom and accomplishments of African Americans. The date marks June 19th, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived at Galveston, Texas to announce that all slaves were free- a full two-and-a-half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, and considerably afterward the end of the Civil War.
