What about money from the Fair Share Amendment (aka the millionaires' tax)? It's good news overall, with the estimated amount of collections higher than predicted. But this overage is required to be spent on capital projects - it can still turn into good news for Melrose, but it doesn't help our annual operating budget situation.

Dan Krechmer's three kids graduated from Melrose Public Schools - here he explains why he's voting YES on June 18: "Data on our current financial situation make it clear that we have a difficult choice to make: either we provide additional revenue to fund needed investments, or we implement painful cuts to schools, public safety, and other city services. The numbers do not lie, and there is no way out of this choice. I strongly believe that our current public school students should receive the same quality education that my children received.”

Yesterday was overall per capita spending; today it's per pupil spending! There are 399 school districts in Massachusetts. Melrose is number 371 in per pupil spending.

We just shared about taxes - what about spending? Melrose budgets LESS per capita than the state average, by more than $1000 per resident.
