Everyone experiences stressors in their day to day lives, and it is normal to experience disappointments, setbacks, and failures. Therefore, it is important to have effective ways to bounce back from the obstacles that we all face. Particularly during this unprecedented time, having effective coping skills can help to reduce stress, adapt to change, and promote mental health and wellness.

What are coping skills? Coping skills are tools and techniques you can use to help handle negative emotions, stress, and establish a sense of internal balance. Coping skills can be either problem- focused or emotion-focused. Problem-focused coping skills involve finding methods to work through a problem and reduce stress. Examples of these could be working on managing your busy schedule or asking for support when in need of help. Emotion-focused coping can help you to handle the negative emotions that are caused by a problem or stressful situation. Emotion-focused coping skills can include physical exercise, doing an activity you enjoy, or simply taking a few deep breaths to relax.

If you are experiencing stress and are in need of finding healthy coping strategies that work for you, please contact Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Tech. We offer individual psychotherapy by skilled student clinicians who are supervised by licensed psychologists.
