"The Purpose of Destruction" preached by Pastor Andrew Standley at First Medina (First Baptist Church of Medina, Ohio). Sunday, June 14, 2026 at the 9:00 AM worship service. Part of our series The God of the Old Testament.
About This Message
This message is part of First Medina's commitment to preach through the Bible week after week, with clarity and care. First Medina (First Baptist Church of Medina, Ohio) believes that Scripture has something real to say to real people, and that conviction shapes everything about how we approach Sunday morning. Wherever you are in your own story, whether you have followed Jesus for decades or you are not sure what you believe, this message is worth your time.
About First Medina
First Medina is a gospel-centered congregation located in Medina, Ohio. We exist to help people find hope and life in Jesus Christ. Everything we do, from our Sunday services to our community ministries, flows out of a conviction that the gospel of Jesus is the most important message in the world and that the local church exists to proclaim it.
We are committed to clear, expository Bible teaching that takes Scripture seriously and applies it to real life. We are committed to worship that is theologically rich and genuinely heartfelt. And we are committed to authentic community, the kind where people are known, loved, and challenged to grow together in faith. We are not a perfect church, but we are a forgiven one, and we welcome anyone who is willing to come and hear what God has to say.
We gather in person every Sunday at 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM in Medina, Ohio. Both services are identical.
The Gospel
The word "gospel" simply means good news, and the Christian claim is that it is the best news the world has ever heard.
Here is what we believe and why we preach it every week: every human being was created by God and for God, but every one of us has turned away from him. The Bible calls this sin, and it is not simply a matter of making mistakes. It is a fundamental orientation of the human heart away from God and toward ourselves. The consequence of that is real: separation from God, both now and eternally.
But God did not leave us in that condition. In an act of extraordinary love and grace, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to enter into human history. Jesus lived a perfectly obedient life, fulfilling everything God required. Then he went to the cross, where he bore the full weight of sin and its judgment in the place of everyone who would trust in him. He died. He was buried. And on the third day, he rose from the dead, physically and bodily, vindicating everything he claimed and accomplishing everything he promised.
The resurrection is not a symbol or a metaphor. It is the hinge on which all of history turns. Because Jesus is alive, sin is forgiven, death is defeated, and there is real hope for every person who comes to him in faith.
That faith is not complicated. It is not about being good enough or religious enough. It is simply trusting that what Jesus did is enough, turning from living for yourself, and following him. If you have never done that and you want to know more, we would love to talk with you.

Some say they prefer the God of the New Testament to the God of the Old. Sunday, Kurt walked through Nahum 1 and showed why that split does not hold. The same God who brings down a violent, oppressive city is the refuge of everyone who runs to Him. His anger is not a tantrum. It is aimed at evil. And when evil is finally dealt with, the people who were crushed under it go free.
That is the heart of it. The destroyer of evil is the comforter of souls. It points straight to the cross, where Jesus took the wrath we had earned so that we would not have to.
"The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him." (Nahum 1:7, ESV)
