I've been in a bit of a funk today. Despite limiting my consumption of news and social media, my mind keeps wandering back to the tragic crash involving AA 5342 (operated by PSA Airlines) and a military Black Hawk helicopter. The feeling is similar to the day 10 years ago when WDBJ reporter Alison Parker and photographer Adam Ward were shot and killed on live TV.
These are events that hit too close to home. These careers have shaped my life. I understand where your mind is just before landing, or conducting an interview on live tv. The thought of suddenly not being alive is unfathomable. Especially when I feel so full of life. Aviation is relatively safe; however, it's not accident proof. In an instant, everything can change. For me, I just assume (and hope) everything will be ok. I'll get to go on my layover. I'll get to go home. While I have trained and prepared for all types of emergencies, nothing can truly prepare me for death.
As a side note, PSA was the first airline to offer me a job, the start of my journey in aviation. It’s surreal to think about how life unfolds—how a name that once represented an opportunity now carries a tragic reminder of life’s fragility.
I hope you can take a break from all the coverage. While it is good to reflect and pay respect, don't overwhelm yourself. For me, this accident is another reminder to be present—to live fully and authentically. We get one shot. Don't waste it.
