The guided and I on an adventurous hike up the Solheimajokull Glacier. Our guide was from Chile and new to the hike, but she was terrific. We had a ton of fun. When we started out it was cloudy and a little rainy, as we got on the glacier things started to clear up, it turned out to be a beautiful warm day.
Being out on a little adventure often you meet other people who are on an adventure themselves. Its one of the fun parts of any trip. We ran into a couple who were just married and wanted to get some additional wedding photos and they chose this glacier as their back drop. I snuck a couple photos myself, cute couple and a stunning backdrop!
Something interesting to me was the black sand mixed in the glacier, which I learned is volcanic ash. When I was in grade school we took a field trip to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Pacific Palisades. It was a full day of real art education! The museum was designed after an ancient Roman villa that was discovered in Pompeii, Italy. I remember several years ago a volcano erupting in Iceland that shut down air traffic for a few weeks as this cloud of ash dissipated around the world. When I heard the news about this massive cloud of ash, in my naiveté, I thought of ash like ash from a camp fire, not earth or sand that was super heated and so small that it would float in the atmosphere for weeks. This was fascinating to me! It added a new perspective to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, resulting in Pompeii being buried in mountains of volcanic ash.
