We've gotten some much-needed rain recently! Wondering why lake levels haven't skyrocketed? When the soil is dry from drought, it acts like a sponge and soaks in the rain. Once the ground is saturated, rain will begin to run off into the lakes.

Rain also needs to fall in the right places to flow into our reservoirs. The watershed that feeds the lakes is a 14,700-square-mile area upstream of Austin and stretching to the north and west out past Fredericksburg, Junction, Brady and San Saba. Rain must fall in this watershed for it to have a chance to flow into Lake Buchanan or Lake Travis.
