After 50 plus years of listening to home audio systems it has become very obvious that the most important part of the system by far is the room where the system is situated. One of my earliest experiences in home audio was bringing home a new amplifier and loudspeakers from a high end stereo store and and setting them up in my parents basement. Disappointingly the system sounded very bright and thin when compared to listening to the same speakers at the store. I next tried a larger amplifier, but the results were still bright and thin within the concrete walls and floors in the basement. I finally moved the system to my brothers home as a test and the results were hugely improved in his carpeted high ceiling environment. I was amazed at how much difference the room made! Long story short with huge strides in digital signal processing room acoustic distortions can now be greatly "corrected". Dirac Research is the leader in room correction DSP and have just recently released their latest version called "Active Room Treatment" I have been experimenting with ART at our office for several month now and the results are amazingly good! The price point for entry into Dirac's Active Room Treatment was just reduced with the introduction of lower cost surround receivers from Denon and Marantz(see the Denon 3800 attached below).
