Most people know ivermectin from recent headlines, but this "wonder drug" has long been celebrated for its real purpose: fighting parasites. Discovered in Japanese soil in the late 1970s, it earned its discoverers a share of the 2015 Nobel Prize in medicine. For decades, scientists have explored whether treating white-tailed deer with these compounds could reduce the ticks that spread Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and other dangerous illnesses to both livestock and humans.
The challenge has always been practical. Early research showed that feeding deer ivermectin-treated bait could effectively kill ticks, but labeling rules prevented hunters from consuming treated deer for 48 days afterwardโa real problem given regulated hunting seasons. As an alternative, "4-poster" devices were developed to let deer apply tick-killing treatment to themselves, but these proved expensive, labor-intensive, and ironically fattened up the very deer that help ticks reproduce.
Enter moxidectin, a more modern relative of ivermectin. Its pour-on formulation, Cydectin, has a major advantage: a zero-day withdrawal period, meaning treated animals are safe to consume right away. This breakthrough prompted researchers at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, alongside partners at White Buffalo, Inc. and funded by the CDC, to test whether feeding deer moxidectin-treated corn could work as a tick-control strategy.
The results were encouraging. During the springs and summers of 2021 and 2022, free-ranging deer in Norwalk, Connecticut, were fed treated corn while lone star ticks were active. When researchers captured and tested the deer, 83 percent (24 of 29) had moxidectin in their blood at levels known to kill ticks. Notably, deer with higher moxidectin levels carried fewer engorged ticksโexactly as expected, since ticks must feed on treated blood to be affected.
This proof-of-concept suggests oral delivery of systemic tick treatments could help reduce tick populations across entire landscapes, not just on individual animals. The team has already secured a new CDC grant to study combined treatment of both deer and mice to target blacklegged ticks and the pathogens they carry. It's a promising step toward tackling tick-borne disease at its ecological source.
