Chest rigs give multiple advantages over a plate carrier when ballistic protection isn’t required. They are going to give you significantly less weight than a plate carrier while also giving you better mobility. Typically they are more affordable over a plate carrier and can be easily thrown over anything you are wearing.

Many modern chest rigs are able to integrate directly with a plate carrier allowing you to transfer the same loadout onto armor or can be worn over slick armor carriers. Scaling up and down has never been easier.
