THE GREEN, GREEN WORLD

"June comes, and ours is so green a world that we quite forget the all but leafless days of January, so warm and beneficent a world that we can't quite remember those zero mornings when the land was white with snow and ice. Now it is June, it is warm, it is summer... Robins have found their voices and brown thrashers celebrate morning, afternoon, and evening."
~Hal Borland (American writer, journalist and naturalist; 1900 - 1978)

SUKIYA -- THE JAPANESE ART OF INTEGRATING HOUSE AND GARDEN

There’s something timeless about a home that doesn’t compete with nature, but quietly belongs to it.

Inspired by a traditional Japanese architectural style that dates back to 16th-century tea houses, the sukiya design approach celebrates the deep connection between house and garden. Every element is intentional: natural materials like wood and stone, simple lines, and spaces that invite stillness rather than excess.

But what makes this style truly special is how seamlessly the indoors and outdoors flow together. The garden isn’t just something look at—it becomes part of the living space, a daily presence that brings calm, beauty, and perspective. This harmonious integration between the house and the garden is a goal that we, at Hanselman Landscape, seek to incorporate into each of the gardens we design and build for our clients from our headquarters in Manheim, Pennsylvania.

The Sukiya living ideal is a reminder that a home can be more than shelter—it can be a place of harmony, where nature and daily life exist side by side in quiet balance.
