June 14 is Skunk Day, and Sunset Zoo thinks that’s pretty scent-sational!
Skunks may be small and adorable, but they also play an important role in nature. These furry friends help by eating insects, grubs, small rodents, and even aerating the soil. This means they are an important part of our healthy ecosystem!
If you spot a skunk in the wild, remember: look, don’t linger. Give it plenty of space, keep pets close, and never try to approach or feed it. If a skunk feels scared, it may stomp its feet, raise its tail, or turn around to warn you before spraying.
Let’s celebrate skunks for all the good they do, from a safe and respectful distance, of course!

Discover all of Kansas’s The Association of Zoos and Aquariums zoos this summer!
Anyone age 3 or older can get one free passport at a participating zoo or print one from our website (link below). Bring it when you visit participating zoos to collect stamps and receive small prizes throughout your summer safari around Kansas.
Once you’ve collected stamps from all seven zoos, mail in your completed passport for a chance to win a behind-the-scenes encounter at the zoo of your choice!
