I cofounded Material in 1979 and was a member until early 1984. Within 5 years, we morphed from being a downtown New York band who played shows and occasionally released our own records, to a production team, working with artists like Nona Hendrix and eventually, Herbie Hancock. Through this period, I cut my teeth as a synth player and eventually realized that my place was behind a recording console and not on a stage.
-The first picture is from CBGB in 1979 and I’m using an EMS Synthi AKS that belonged to the late jazz drummer Stu Martin.
- The second picture is from Club Hurrah in 1979 and features the legendary guitarist Sonny Sharrock who was a touring member of Material from 1980.
- The third picture is of me and Bill Laswell in 1981 working at RPM Studios on Nona Hendryx’s first solo record for RCA.
- The last picture is from a 1983 Material show featuring the Japanese trumpet player, Toshinori Kondo at the Seibu department store performance space in Tokyo, Japan. This was the last time I shared a stage as a member of Material and my final live performance. Three years later, I began producing a relatively unknown band from Los Angeles called The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

My Moog.
It's 2 systems combined, one from the 60's and one from the 70's. It has 46 original modules, plus a quantizer, ring modulator, TRS-banana adaptor panel and portamento/slew generator that are custom.
