Officer Mark Jensen had been in a coma for two weeks after a high-speed chase ended in a crash. Doctors told his wife, Sarah, there was little brain activity. It was time to consider removing life support.
Holding Mark’s limp hand, Sarah stood beside their six-year-old daughter, Emma. But someone was missing—Cooper, Mark’s retired K9 partner and loyal companion of seven years.
“Can I bring him?” Sarah asked. “Can I bring Cooper to say goodbye?”
The doctors agreed.
Cooper, a German Shepherd, had been restless since the accident. Now, as he entered the hospital room, he approached Mark’s bed slowly. Then, suddenly, he leapt.
“Cooper!” Sarah gasped.
The nurses stopped her. “Wait,” one said. “Look.”
Cooper landed gently on Mark’s chest and barked—loud, sharp, and urgent. Then it happened: Mark’s finger twitched.
“His hand!” Sarah cried. “He moved!”
The doctor rushed in. Mark’s lips twitched. His eyes fluttered. The staff was stunned.
