"An institution transformed in its capacity to entertain, inform, explore, and amaze, but still to its core the same warm, hospitable center”—Time Out New York #newIAC

Take a look at what last spring's community and family festivities brought to life: our St. Brigid's Day Imbolc Family concert featuring the award-winning Crankie Island Song Project; the annual St. Pat's for All benefit event; and Féile na Gaeilge / Irish Language Day, hosted by Dublin-based global storytelling collective Seanchoíche.

In this year’s iteration of our annual intercultural community art residency at P.S. 69Q in Jackson Heights, students took part in 10 weeks of creative writing workshops and dance classes—Irish and Tibetan—culminating in performances and sharing events for parents, peers, and the public. We thank our partners at Himalayan Language and Cultural Program and NYC Council Member Shekar Krishnan for his continued support of this program, and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs for their partnership.

Few photographers have captured Ireland with the intimacy, dignity, and artistry of Cork-born John Minihan. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Minihan has created some of the most iconic photographic portraits of our time, from Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney to ordinary people whose faces and stories became part of Ireland’s visual memory. His work bridges worlds: rural and urban, famous and unknown, Irish and international.
In 2008, he was commissioned to photograph TO LOVE TWO COUNTRIES, a landmark project documenting the Irish experience in America. Over the years, his lens has captured not only literary giants and world-renowned artists, but also members of the NYPD, Irish immigrants, workers, musicians, and communities whose lives helped shape the city itself.
This year, as the National Gallery of Ireland mounts a retrospective marking Minihan’s 80th birthday, we are celebrating his extraordinary contribution to photography, Irish cultural life, and transatlantic artistic exchange.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 30, John Minihan will be joined in conversation by Rachael Gilkey (Irish Arts Center) and Sarah McAuliffe (curator of Irish Art (Post 1900), National Gallery of Ireland), followed by a Q&A.
Please join us before the event, from 6pm in the Library, to view the exhibition.
Copies of the accompanying publication of the same title will be available for purchase before and after the event.
Admission is free, but reservations are required. A few tickets have just been released: irishartscenter.org/event/john-minihan-in-conversation
