Short-term memory is the path to long-term information storage. The human brain is capable of handling an average of seven pieces of information before the short-term memory slots are full; and unless an effort is made to retain that information, it will be gone in 20 seconds. Help learners retain that information by grouping related information, using auditory stimuli, highlighting key concepts at the beginning and end of the course, and using real world challenges and scenarios. Now that’s something to remember!

Squirrel! Do your learners have trouble focusing? Keep their attention by keeping things moving, meaningful and surprising. Use pictures and animation - people are naturally inclined to pay attention to images because it’s quicker to understand than a large block of text. Surprise them! When eLearning content is surprising or unexpected, ignoring it is impossible. Even just an unexpected quick fact or statistic will get their attention. A group of squirrels is called a "scurry" or "dray." Got your attention!
