This week on Nonprofits on a Mission, I sit down with John Judge, Scout Executive and CEO of Scouting America, Greater Boston and now author of a new book on nonprofits and AI.
John's been in the nonprofit world for over 30 years, from Habitat for Humanity to a decade leading the Appalachian Mountain Club, and now back to where his own journey started as an Eagle Scout in Milton, MA.
We're talking about:
🟢 Rebuilding trust and growth after a tough chapter for the organization
🟢 Why getting youth outside and away from screens is more important than ever
🟢 Bringing scouting to gateway cities and underserved communities
🟢 Diversifying revenue through endowment building, grants, and estate gifts
🟢 His new book on protecting human agency and purpose in the age of AI

The other morning, I was working in the living room when I heard little footsteps in the kitchen, the fridge door opening, and then a huge BANG! I tossed my laptop and ran in to see blueberries rolling towards my feet and our dog scurrying in to do her job.
As I turned the corner, I saw leftovers, fruit, and yogurt cups strewn about and my daughter with her hands up. “It’s fine, it’s FINE! Nobody died. Go back to work!” She exclaimed and instructed me as she started to assist the dog with cleaning up the mess.
This whole episode got me thinking how often we get distracted by the BANG! in the other room. You’re focused on something important but then can’t keep your eyes away from the mess. Looming deadlines, someone out sick, emergency in a program, board member calling with an issue.
Here’s your reminder to keep your eyes on the prize and try not to get too distracted by the BANG! You know it’s coming one way or another. 🫣
