On Saturday, November 22, Capitol Water Trails hosted its final cleanup of the 2025 season with a productive workday along the Koshkonong Creek. The five-person volunteer crew gathered at Badger Farms before heading to their worksite on N. Jargo Road, near the bridge on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail.
The volunteer team represented a strong partnership among local conservation groups. Two members came from the Friends of the Koshkonong Creek, two from the Maunesha River Alliance, and Steve represented Capitol Water Trails. Together, they tackled one of the area’s most pressing issues: a large debris blockage that had accumulated near the bridge.
The clog, made up of several massive logs and layers of bark that fell a large cottonwood tree, had severely impeded the creek’s natural flow. The obstruction caused duckweed to flourish, led to the formation of a floating island, and forced excess water into surrounding fields. The crew worked diligently to clear the blockage and restore the creek’s flow with the help of a skidsteer. In addition, they removed invasive honeysuckle and buckthorn trees to promote the return of native vegetation.
With this successful cleanup, Capitol Water Trails officially concluded its scheduled events for 2025. However, organizers noted that additional workdays may be scheduled if weather conditions remain favorable.
Community members interested in future volunteer opportunities are encouraged to reach out by messaging Capitol Water Trails through their page. Every cleanup effort helps protect and restore local waterways—strengthening the natural beauty and ecological health of the region for years to come.
