I think many of you are fans of Aaron Tveit. Me too! He certainly is a reigning broadway contemporary tenor. In this live performance of Bernstein's "Maria", although we can still hear his signature contemporary sound ... we also are able to hear glimpses of his ability to add more head space and a lyrical sound on the top. It can be done people! Not everything has to be screamed at the top. 🙂

I once read that Bernstein was often displeased with the sopranos that sang this aria from his work, Candide, because he wanted them all to sound more like they were laughing than singing staccati, including Barbara Cook (the original). I like watching Berstein's face as we turns from the podium every now and then to glance at June Anderson sing this very challenging aria. What do you think? Does he like it or not? I personally think she is amazing at the calisthenics that it takes to pull off this aria. But what do I know?! This was never in my repertoire ... and I didn't write it. LOL!
