UW-Madison students and community members marched from Library Mall to Bascom Hall, demanding the university protect students from ICE and federal agents. Madison Students for a Democratic Society presented five demands: implement an ICE alert system, pledge university resources to protect vulnerable students, establish remote attendance procedures during ICE presence, end campus surveillance and protect student identities, and restore free speech policies. The rally called on UW administration to create a sanctuary campus and stand up for immigrant rights.

Following the murder of Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross on January 7th and ICE agents confronting students at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, school walkouts spread across the country. Madison East and West High School students marched to the Wisconsin State Capitol for a speak-out against ICE, joining peers nationwide protesting an administration that shows disregard for their future. As a parent of a participating student, the pride mixed with sadness was overwhelming—children shouldn’t have to protest a fascist future.
