Over a century ago, Madam C.J. Walker built an empire that transformed Black haircare and beauty, becoming the first self-made Black woman millionaire. But her legacy was about more than products—it was about economic empowerment, confidence, and paving the way for Black entrepreneurs. She showed the world that beauty is power and that Black-owned businesses could thrive and uplift their communities.

Today, that legacy continues with Design to Shine, a proud Oakland Thrive client carrying the torch in modern beauty, self-care, and personal expression. Just as Madam Walker created haircare tailored for Black women, Design to Shine specializes in custom beauty and styling solutions that celebrate individuality and culture. From the consultation to the finishing touches they take pride in offering a personalized experience for each guest.

Creating and maintaining healthy hair for their clients is a priority and creative styling is the passion of owner Brenda Vorus. They offer everything from cuts and color to braids and extensions for both adults and children. Brenda also has a strong commitment to helping parents of mixed-race children learn to manage their children’s hair at home.

One broke barriers, the other builds on that foundation. Together, they prove that Black beauty is not just a business—it’s a movement. ⭐💛
