Juneteenth—short for June 19th—marks the day in 1865 when the last remaining enslaved people in Texas were finally informed of their freedom—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

While now a federal holiday, Juneteenth is more than a day off. It’s a time to honor the long and difficult journey toward freedom and to reflect on the work that still lies ahead.

At HDC, we view Juneteenth as both a historical milestone and a reminder of how equity, justice, and mental well-being are deeply connected—especially for Black Americans who continue to experience the impacts of systemic and generational trauma.

Even if this history isn’t your own, taking time to reflect is a meaningful step toward empathy, inclusion, and shared responsibility in building a healthier society.

As part of our commitment to inclusive wellness, here are five key facts about Juneteenth:
🔹 Delayed Freedom: Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas—over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
🔹 Enduring Significance: It’s the longest-standing African American holiday and became a federal holiday in 2021.
🔹 Systemic Delay: Freedom was not immediately enforced—slaveholders delayed liberation to preserve labor.
🔹 Reflection & Celebration: It’s a time to honor resilience and engage in conversations on equity and healing.
🔹 Healing Is Freedom: Racial trauma impacts access to care. Seeking mental health support is a vital step in liberation.
