Thoughts from Rabbi Scott Hoffman:
What does it mean to "look Jewish", i.e., to be "other"? Growing up, if I saw myself now as an adult, I would have said that I definitely look Jewish - male, gray haired, clean shaven, married with three children. But as an adult, I've become increasingly aware that Jews don't always need to "look Jewish". We have brothers and sisters who are black and brown, gay and le***an, transgender and nonbinary.
To be Jewish means, in other words, not to focus on physical appearance, but on how our thoughts, speech and action bring holiness into the world. In the words of Ethics of the Fathers (4:1), a truly wise person is one who learns from all others, and the truly honored person is one who honors all humanity.

Our May Donations Drive for Re:Center Ministries was a huge success!! Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to support such a good cause. Re:Center Ministries is the current occupant of AJ’s former home at 757 S. Brook Street, prior to the move to the current Woodbourne Avenue location. They provide assistance and support systems to some of the most vulnerable folks in our community: unhoused men, women, and children. On May 8th, AJ coordinated a field trip to the “Old AJ” for Members and anyone interested in the history of AJ to tour those hallowed halls. In partnership with our field trip, AJ adopted the month of May for ReCenter’s monthly donation drive. Their requests for May were for cleaning supplies, and AJ came through in spades! Once the final items were gathered, AJ Members Arnold Zegart and Ed Bornstein delivered the collected donations down to Re:Center. What a mitzvah!
