AHOY
Portland Museum is an educational resource that collects, preserves, exhibits, interprets, and enhances the culture and heritage of Portland, a neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky that was once a thriving independent town below the Falls of the Ohio. Thus, we are not just a museum focused on the history of Portland — and inherently the history of Shippingport Island and Louisville — we are so muc
Dear friends and AHOY Children’s Museum Supporters—
We are astounded that our hard work and perseverance have been recognized in Mayor Craig Greenberg’s proposed budget, which includes an allocation for AHOY Children’s Museum. As part of the Portland Museum’s expansion, AHOY will be Louisville’s first children’s museum rooted in the West End—a milestone we’ve reached without any prior city investment.
We are deeply grateful to the Mayor and his team for championing our vision. There’s still one more stretch of water to cross: Metro Council must now approve the allocation. I hope they see this effort as essential for our kids and our community’s future. This was a huge step forward—for AHOY, for the West End, and for all of Louisville.
This accomplishment is yours as much as it is ours. Foundations, community groups, hospitals, board members, committee members, players advocates and cultural centers—you all showed up when it mattered. Your belief in this project will help bridge Ninth Street and give Louisville’s kids the chance to learn, play, and explore together.
Thank you for being the wind in our sails. We are grateful to our city officials and to Councilwoman Donna Purvis for helping champion this initiative. We hope to celebrate once Metro Council makes their decision—and to the bright days ahead for our youngest explorers.
Sincerely,
Portland Museum + AHOY Children’s Museum

We had an amazing groundbreaking this past October! It takes a team! We were honored to receive acclamations from both our Mayor and Governor. 🙌
A special thanks to our speakers at the groundbreaking event: Portland Museum Board President Kacie Chase, Secretary of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet Lindy Casebier, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, Metro Councilwoman Donna Purvis, AHOY Director Danny Seim, and Portland Museum Executive Director Katy Delahanty! And an amazing performance by Louisville Leopard Percussionists!!
From Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg:
📜 “Greetings to all whom these presents shall come: know ye that October 5, 2024, is hereby proclaimed in Louisville, Kentucky, as AHOY Children’s Museum Day. I urge all residents to observe this special recognition.”
From Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky:
📜 “For 50 years, the Portland Museum has celebrated this unique Louisville neighborhood through art, community, and culture. Today, we are excited to announce the groundbreaking of the Adventure House of You (AHOY) Children’s Museum—Louisville’s first dedicated children’s museum—on October 5, 2024. This new addition will be a hub for cultural and creative expression, overseen by a Kids Council and the AHOY Advisory Committee. With a focus on equity and sustainability, it will enrich the lives of all who call Portland home.”
We are so grateful for these incredible acknowledgments as we move forward in this exciting journey!

Q***r Garage Gym started their first of many “horizontal forces” community workdays.
Yesterday they gathered in our beautiful backyard for a guided warmup — checking in with their bodies + rehearsing the functional movement patterns they needed to unearth some tremendous big fence posts! Digging, pulling, squatting, carrying, etc.
Why are they doing this?? to make space for community gathering + performance space in association with AHOY — a unique twist to the often-predictable children’s museum experience that aims to engage a child’s natural curiosity by activating all senses. Thematically, AHOY will reflect Kentucky's maritime heritage, based on the Ohio river that cradles our Port-Land and inspires rich neighborhood folklore.
As they continue in events to come, they will have water, snacks, + gloves to share! Given that they will be in close proximity + likely breathing heavily, they will always ask that folks wear a mask. They will continue to take time throughout the work day to spread out + unmask for some fresh air!
Our board member facilitated and photographed this fun educational time.
