A year ago, up to a million farmers began protesting on the outskirts of Delhi against these bills, which farmers have argued worsen the already harsh ecological and economic conditions in which they live. The farmers–seeking only to demonstrate peacefully and defend their livelihoods–have faced violence and repression from the Indian government, internet shutdowns, cold temperatures, and more. More than 600 farmers have lost their lives since the began.

The farmers have committed to seeing their protest through until the bills are fully repealed in Parliament. While there are concerns that the promise may be a political tactic given upcoming elections, the fact remains that the farmers have remained steadfast in their calls for this repeal for more than a year.”
