Kirby traded away his usual tricks for a Yarn Whip!

Launched in 2010 for the Nintendo Wii, Kirby’s Epic Yarn was a departure from traditional Kirby games in more ways than one.

Epic Yarn was animated using a combination of 3D modeling, 2D movement, and photographs of real fabric textures to create the epic world within the game.

The game prioritized the coziness of Kirby games, and focused on exploration and creativity. The game famously never allowed players to actually die within the game. All in all, the game was a pretty low-stress experience for Kirby fans.

It’s not a Kirby title without a little transformation, of course. Instead of inhaling enemies, Kirby transformed into objects or vehicles that would help players navigate levels. Kirby could transform into a parachute, a submarine, and even a rocket ship.

Over fifteen years since launching, Kirby’s Epic Yarn is remembered for the groundbreaking aesthetic. The game was the best of Kirby- it was charming, it was accessible, and it was an absolute blast to play.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn would even go on to inspire other craft-style games like the beloved Yoshi titles later released by Nintendo.
