used to sell manuals through mail order to people who wanted to learn the martial art. These images and words are from 1914, it was later compiled into a 131 page book to get an early collection of techniques and approach. This is the legendary that was popularized by Burns and as you can see it was rarely a figure four isolated attack rather a top position, body pinned to the mat torque of the foot to attack the ankle. After reading this book and many others the methods are ideal. The hammerlock and Nelsons were the bread and butter of the holds back then to initiate a pin, the pain compliance moves were so the opponent would TURN to their back to lose the fall, there wasn’t any tapping out back in the day.

Love this conversation between and on training to make someone tap. I agree, I spar to measure me weight distribution, mechanics, leverage, timing, etc Especially as a heavyweight it’s hard to find partners, then when it comes to me. If it hurts I tap! Simple! chokes leg locks etc tap early and often. Grappling should be pain intensive, it’s a martial art. Don’t go overboard but we’re not here to do choreography on the mat.

Whomever wins the while standing up, shall win the takedown. Working with .wrestler on technique really drilled that into me. is really brilliant.
