In the Sioux tribes, polygamy is not merely a casual custom but a well-established and practical practice closely tied to the economic and social structure of their nomadic society. This arrangement is prevalent among high-status men, such as chiefs, elite warriors, and skilled hunters, as having multiple wives is a public sign of wealth and capability.

A common practice is to marry sisters, which is considered particularly advantageous because it is believed that sisters will cooperate more harmoniously in the labor-intensive daily tasks. The collective labor of the wives — including skin processing, meat preservation, sewing clothes, and managing the lodge — is essential for the family's wealth and mobility. Furthermore, polygamy serves as a social safety net, integrating widows and their children into a new family unit, thereby strengthening kinship ties and ensuring the cohesion and survival of the group.
