How a Smudge Pot Works

A smudge pot is a simple, durable outdoor heating and ambiance feature that produces controlled heat and flame. Fuel (typically diesel, kerosene, or waste oil—depending on the design and local regulations) is poured into the pot’s sealed reservoir. Once ignited, the fuel burns steadily, creating radiant heat and a visible flame that exits through the top vent.

The heavy steel construction absorbs heat and radiates it outward, helping warm the surrounding area while also producing a classic, industrial-style flame effect. The top vent or chimney controls airflow, which helps regulate the burn and keeps the flame stable.

Smudge pots are commonly used for:
• Outdoor warmth on patios, farms, and job sites
• Visual ambiance and decorative flame features
• Repurposed industrial or rustic outdoor décor

Because there are no moving parts, electricity, or pressurized systems, smudge pots are reliable, easy to operate, and built for long-term outdoor use when used responsibly.
