Episode 5 of The Lobo Den features a true Longview legend: Mary "Tidy" Johnson

From 1979–1983, Mary made history as the first girl to play four years of varsity basketball at Longview. Her accomplishments on the court were remarkable, but her impact went far beyond the game. Through her dedication, discipline, and leadership, Mary helped pave the way for future generations of athletes and became an inspiration to countless young women in the Longview community.

Mary went on to become the all-time assist leader in Texas high school girls basketball history (1,169), a record that still stands to this day! That record reflects not only her exceptional skill, but also her vision, unselfishness, and ability to make everyone around her better. She understood that basketball was never just about individual success, it was about trust, teamwork, preparation, and lifting up the people beside her.

But statistics and records only tell part of Mary’s story. Her greatest legacy is found in the sacrifices she made for her family and the example she continues to set. Through hard work, commitment, and putting others before herself, Mary showed that success is often built on the quiet sacrifices made behind the scenes. Her dedication to her family, her community, and the people who depended on her reflects the same strength and selflessness she brought to the court.

She is a natural-born leader whose influence reaches far beyond the game, and her story represents the determination, pride, and perseverance that define Longview.

Her journey is a reminder that true legends are not defined solely by what they accomplish, but by the sacrifices they make, the doors they open, the lives they touch, and the inspiration they leave behind.

We’re honored to sit down with Mary, celebrate her incredible story, and recognize the lasting legacy she has built through her family, her community, and beyond. 💚💛
