On this day in US Army SF/SOF history; the 1st Special Service Force (FSSF) was activated at Fort William Henry Harrison in Montana. It was a unique joint unit comprising approximately 1,800 soldiers, with an equal mix of American and Canadian troops. The unit was initially formed under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Robert T. Frederick and was designed to conduct specialized operations, including winter warfare, airborne assaults, and amphibious landings.
