Lipoedema: Problems caused by impaired fat metabolism
Lipoedema is a chronic condition that mainly affects the lower limbs. It is characterised by abnormal and uneven accumulation of fatty tissue. This condition often presents bilaterally symmetrically, usually starting in the distal part of the legs and gradually spreading upwards.
Lymphoedema: swelling caused by obstructed lymphatic circulation
Lymphoedema results from a dysfunction in the lymphatic system, leading to poor drainage of lymph fluid. Excess lymph fluid accumulates in the interstitial spaces, causing local or systemic swelling.

Catharina Hospital today introduced the new home monitoring programme for pregnant women with (risk of) hypertension. Using the “Home Monitoring App”, our patients can now measure their blood pressure daily at home and track their health via an app. This allows specialists in the hospital - through the monitoring centre - to keep a close eye on patients' well-being and intervene more quickly if necessary.
Michelle Westerhuis, gynaecologist at Catharina Hospital, explains what will change and improve for patients: "Pregnant women with an increased risk of high blood pressure or with actually elevated blood pressure had to come to the hospital frequently for measurements and check-ups. This is a big burden, for both the patient and the hospital. With the blood pressure monitor, which they get from the hospital, and the app, they can now do that daily themselves. This way we monitor better and the burden is less for the women and the doctors and nurses in the hospital."
If measurements deviate, the hospital quickly contacts patients through the monitoring centre. ‘This way, we avoid unnecessary visits to the hospital and home monitoring may lead to fewer admissions because we monitor patients more frequently.’
