Matt
Winning doesn’t mean the technique was sound.
The double leg finished, but my chest got too far extended, my legs stopped driving, and I took him toward the side my head was trapped on — all things that could’ve easily created bigger problems against someone making different choices.
He chose the overhook instead of attacking my neck, which changed the exchange completely.
The obvious reaction would’ve been passing toward my underhook side, but with his hips turned and overhook pressure, that path gave him a strong wrestle-up opportunity.
So instead of forcing the “available” pass, we switch sides, lock both arms behind the back, and stabilize before working.
Good outcomes can hide bad habits if you’re not honest with your film.

In jiu-jitsu, the first attack is usually just the question.
The real opening comes from the answer.
Defend the choke → expose the arm.
Defend the sweep → give the back.
Defend the pass → create the submission.
The goal isn’t forcing one move.
It’s using their defense to lead them into the next problem.
Their defense is the setup.

Nobody rolls like this…😅
And if you try to force these exact sequences in live rounds, you’re probably missing the point.
Flow drills aren’t about memorizing choreography. They’re a way to stack high-quality reps together while building timing, transitions, reactions, and an understanding of how positions connect.
Sometimes the sequences are realistic. Sometimes they’re completely ridiculous. Both can still be useful if you understand the purpose behind the training.

I wasn’t trying to hit a textbook twister here. I was just playing around in dog fight and paying attention to the mechanics.
My trapped leg was already creating force in one direction. Once I controlled and pulled the opposite side arm, it started creating that same twisting pressure — even without the traditional entanglement.
That’s the difference between memorizing techniques and actually understanding them.
When you understand why things work instead of just following steps, your reactions become more natural, your creativity opens up, and your fight IQ goes through the roof.
The best grapplers don’t just know moves.
They understand concepts.
