🚨 Power Outage Safety & What You Can Do Now 🚨

A widespread power outage can be frustrating and even unsafe if you’re not prepared. Whether it’s caused by storm damage, equipment failure, or utility maintenance, here’s how to stay safe and comfortable while power is out:

🔌 Why Outages Happen
Power outages can be caused by storms, accidents involving power lines, equipment failure, or grid overloads. When the electrical system goes down, it affects lighting, refrigeration, heating/cooling, communications, and more.

📍 Safety First
• Treat all downed power lines as live and dangerous — stay far away and report them to your utility company. 
• Unplug major electronics to protect them from surges when power returns. 
• Keep one light turned on so you know when power comes back before plugging things in again. 
• Check on family, neighbors, and anyone who may need extra help.

🕯️ Alternative Power & Light
• Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns instead of candles to reduce fire risk. 
• Keep portable phone chargers or power banks ready.

⚡ Generator Use — Great Backup Power, But Use It Safely
Having a generator can make outages much more manageable, but they must be used correctly:

✔ Only run generators outside, away from windows, doors, and vents — carbon monoxide gas from the exhaust can be deadly. 
✔ Keep them 20+ feet from the home with exhaust pointed away. 
✔ Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet — this can send power back into utility lines and injure lineworkers. 
✔ Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords to power appliances directly from the generator. 
✔ Follow all manufacturer instructions and have permanent systems installed by a qualified electrician.
